In the first weekend in February we took a belated birthday trip (for me) to Brighton for the weekend, Brighton is the vegan haven of the UK and I couldn't wait to try some of the vegan food on offer. It just so happens my friend Lynn, former chef and general superwoman animal carer at Jacobs Ridge, has started a vegan food business in Brighton. There was no way I was going to go down that way and not say hello, I also had another motive. Lynn's cooking from what I could remember of my time at Jacob's Ridge was something out of this world, so yes, I admit I was looking forward to going into a food coma from her cooking as well as giving her a big hug! Lynn's business is called Vegan Food Pimp (a name that certainly is well deserved) and she runs this from The Marlborough Pub & Theatre, Prince's Street, Brighton. Lynn is so passionate about cooking, she loves experimenting and creating delicious vegan dishes. So much so that as well as being the chef here at The Marlborough, Lynn has also recently brought out a vegan cook book, if you're interested in the book you can find more information here.
We walked up to The Marlborough Pub & Theatre, from the outside it looked bright and colourful - full of personality and completely fitting in with the Brighton vibe. I was pleased to see Vegan Food Pimp advertised on the front boards (also helpful to know we were in the right place!). Once inside it felt really homely and cosy, the staff were very welcoming and the place had a really relaxed atmosphere. I had reserved us a table as Lynn advised it gets quite busy - how right she was. There was a full house of tables reserved, it was so nice to see that Lynn's food was so popular.
So, the food - Sunday roast consisting of a lentil & nut Roast, roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips, peas and A LOT of yummy homemade gravy. (£12.95)
Followed by chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. (£2.00)
As you can see from the images below - both meals looked spectacular and I can tell you, they tasted equally as delicious! Too be honest I never doubted they would, I was hoping to experience a kind of food zen state after eating Lynn's concoctions again and I was not dissapointed. Everything about this roast was delicious, the gravy was amazing, the roast potatoes were filled with flavour, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. All the vegetables were fresh and super tasty, I know Lynn sources all the vegetables for her cooking locally in Brighton which is great (as opposed to supermarket brought). The lentil & nut roast itself was really scrumptious too, again full of flavour, I know I've used that word a lot but all of this food really was full of flavour - there was NOTHING bland about this meal. I noticed in the past Lynn never did a small plate of food and this meal was no different, a lovely full plate filled with extremely delicious wholesome food to enjoy. Lynn is all about showing that vegan meals can be really interesting, nutritious and delicious and she certainly shows that with her own cooking.
This was my favourite vegan meal of my trip to Brighton, hands down and not just because I know the fabulous lady who cooked it but because it was truly a lovely delectable meal. This meal was completely value for money (they also offer discounts for NHS staff and students), quality ingredients and far better than a lot of meals I've had in some big chain restaurants. There was a really nice feel to the pub too, it was a very pleasant place to eat eat lunch in. You could tell that the meal was cooked with passion and care, this was clearly visible with the quality of the food and in the presentation of the roast dinner - this was on point! I do also want to mention how nice the staff were, a lovely woman called Nadine served us and she is actually the Vegan Food Pimp Restaurant Manager, it was really nice to chat to her as she had also experienced Jacob's Ridge and was clearly wowed by Lynn's cooking - we had a lot in common! Vegan Food Pimp as a brand has some big plans for the future and it has already taken off with a lot of gusto, I know Lynn has created her very own vegan sausages which will soon be available for people to order (I am HUGELY excited for this). There is no stopping this superwoman!
If you're in Brighton I cannot recommend The Marlborough Pub & Theatre and Vegan Food Pimp enough, a great atmosphere and PHENOMENAL tasty food. The Marlborough and Vegan Food Pimp serve food Tuesday through to Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday - lunch only, Thursday, Friday and Saturday - all day and Sundays are roast dinners only. If you wanted to keep up with Lynn and the Vegan Food Pimp world domination check out her Instagram, Twitter and Facebook as well as the Vegan Food Pimp website.
