Shire Snax*, a brand with a J.R.R. Tolkien theme - I'm already sold! I had the opportunity to try some products from Shire Snax, this brand provides snacks and deserts in the form of raw fruit and nut bars that are low in sugar, free from gluten, wheat and dairy and are all suitable for vegan's. A little about Shire Snax - the brains behind this brand are Michelle and Aaron and they create these wonderful foods in Scotland. You can read the back story to Shire Snax on their website, I loved reading the reasons and passion behind why Michelle and Aaron started Shire Snax in the first place. I'm also completely in love with the Lord Of The Rings/Hobbit theme that runs through their branding, products and website. Looking further into this brand, to me, this seem's like a brand that really cares about the product it's putting out there.
I had a lovely selection of their snack bars arrive in the post, including The Aloha, The Green Dragon, Second Breakfast, Bolly-Good Bar, Peppermint Patty, Jaffa (the Hutt) and Boggy Sunshine. How creative are these names? They certainly made me smile as I was looking through the selection. Within the package I received in the post, each bar was sealed in individual plastic pouch (which is very hygienic) this is also great if you wanted to take a bar to work or out with you - it's individually packed and ready to go. If you're allergic to nuts I'm afraid these bars aren't for you, along with Dates as a staple ingredient, there are a lot of Almonds, Macadamia nuts, Cashews, Pecans and Coconut. With all the lovely nutritious nuts in these bars, they also incorporate Currants, Vanilla, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Pineapple, Bannana's, Green Tea Matcha, spices & seasoning's, Cranberry and Orange. It's so nice to find decent vegan snacks that have a real great, natural taste rather than having something that resembles cardboard.
After trying all these bars my favourites have to be Jaffa (the Hutt) and Peppermint Patty, these two bars combine two flavours I love, Jaffa (the Hutt) is a Chocolate, Orange and Coconut bar (sounds scrumptious right?) and Peppermint Patty is a Chocolate and Peppermint bar. Both these bars were extremely delicious and the taste of the orange and mint was lovely and strong. I didn't find these bars to be dry at all (which can be the case with some raw bars I have tried - sometimes you need a pint of water just to get through them). These went down extremely nicely (and quickly - whoops!) and definitely filled a hunger spot.
These Shire Snax bars are great to have in the cupboard to snack on in the day (rather than a whole pack of Oreo's....) or in your bag. I don't know about everyone else but I always get a major slump between about 2:30 - 3:30 at work, a few days in a row I took a bar to work to eat at this particular slump hour and it definitely gave me the boost I needed to finish the day. Each bar has the ingredients listed on one side of the packaging - what you see is what you get. There are no hidden, nasty ingredients or small print that says the sugar content is actually more than any one human should consume (sugar unfortunately is the killer ingredient in some of these so called 'healthy' snacks) but luckily Shire Snax only have natural sugars and natural ingredients.
For approximately a 30g bar it costs just £1 (extremely reasonable for the quality product they are), there is a deal on their site at the moment too - 6 for £5 (what a bargain!). I definitely will be stocking up my cupboard with more Shire Snax very soon, you can catch Shire Snax on Twitter and Facebook and you can make an order here.
