Soapnuts - this is the latest, top trend in ecological washing (the nut is actually a fruit!). I will admit I was very sceptical at the beginning, it was a nut that could do your washing like any other detergent? (*mind blown*) I decided these nuts needed cracking and put to the test! I headed to Living Naturally for some Soapnuts*, these guys have perfected the art of using the Soapnut for so many products. Like their name suggests, Living Naturally are all about the ethics and having natural products. Not just with the credentials of their products, but how the nuts are obtained. These nuts originate from India, using local families & farmers who naturally harvest the fruit after it falls and giving them a fair wage for their work (unlike some big corporations who don't think about the people at the start of the chain!). Living Naturally also ship the products over rather than flying them over to minimise the effect on the environment (always thinking of the planet - love it!).
These Soapnuts are -
- Certified Organic
- Phosphate Free
- Free From - SLS, Parabens, Perfume, Chemical Fillers, Foaming Agents, Optical Brighteners & Bleach.
- Certified Vegan
Their tagline - "Living Naturally Soapnut Shells is the only 100% Biodegradable & Certified Organic detergent that grows on trees! It simply doesn't get greener than this!". And it really can't, this is such a fabulous & natural product. The natural soap within the nut is hypoallergenic and so is great for even the most sensitive of skin types. There are 12 different varieties of Soapnuts (who knew?!) and Living Naturally use the Sapindus Mukurossi type. They had tried & tested many different varieties and found this was the most effective (this nut also has the highest content of soap in the shell). It's great to know a company has taken this much time & effort into getting the perfect, ethical product.
How the nut works:
The Soapnuts are actually dried fruit shells, they have soap naturally built into their shells! The soap in the shells is activated when the shells become aggravated in the washing process. With your purchase of Soapnuts you will get a small muslin bag, you put 5-7 Soapnuts (depending on your washing load) in the small bag and simply place it on top of your washing in the machine. Simple! You can also use the same nuts up to three more times and they are fully biodegradable so don't put them in the bin!
I was so pleasantly surprised by this products, I would never have thought something this simple could be equally good at cleaning my laundry (if not better) than any detergent. These products are so reasonable too and just give you a ridiculous amount of washes compared to your bottled detergents. There is no smell to these Soapnuts (which is nice - no over powering perfumed smell), so if you like a scent you can always add some Essential Oils to the load or Linen Water or another fabric conditioner (cruelty-free of course! I don't always need to add a fabric conditioner, these Soapnuts don't dry out my clothes at all but sometimes I add a bit in for a scent).
This company is so passionate about their products, they clearly believe in them 110% and I can happily say - I believe in them too, there will always be a bag of Soapnuts in my kitchen! In short - I LOVE this product!
They also do Soapnut Liquid Detergent, Laundry Tabs, Powder and Stain Removers. Make sure you take a trip to their site, they have also utilize the power of the Soapnuts to make Shampoo & Conditioner, Shampoo Bars, Salve's & Balm's, Hair Oil, Bathtub Powder, Soap, Body Scrub. Check them out!
