Being Vegetarian or Vegan doesn't just mean food, drink is filled with a cocktail of ingredients (and some ingredients are animal based!). I found out that my favourite cider brand (I won't give it blog air time) a certain fruity cider, contained Gelatin. I was disgusted when I found this out, this hadn't occurred to me before, but I said good bye to the brand I loved! As the summer months are getting closer I needed to find an alternative (I do love sipping an ice cold cider in the blazing sun-perfect!) On a few Vegan groups I belong to on facebook, some people recommended their best Vegan ciders. The above two were the ones I chose first from the suggestions. Westons Stowford Press & Thatchers Gold. Both of these I got in Tesco, I know Thatchers Gold is often in pubs so I should be sorted on an evening out!
Both these ciders tasted lovely, especially the Stowford Press, doesn't taste like alcohol at all (possibly a recipe for disaster!). They smell like proper cider rather than a fruity tone, I thought they might be a bit strong for me but I had nothing to fear! They went down very smoothly and whats lovely is that they are so labelled clearly!
Now - fruity cider (a Strawberry & Lime was my favourite), recently there has been some rumors about some popular brand fruity ciders. I have got a few clarifications - Rekorderlig, KopparBery & Old Mout. Please see below:
So what we gather form the above is that Kopparberg is a no go really, even though there is no Gelatine in the finished product, Gelatine is used in the filtration process (thought clearly this does not bother Olivia!) Its a no go for me. Rekorderlig used to be my favourite drink but that's 100% no go. Old Mout is one that's cropped up as vegan/some of the drinks are vegan/in a different country are vegan. So i'm going to take this as ok, its very similar to most of the products saying 'may contain milk'it's up to you!
Next time you have alcohol (or soft drinks), have a look at the ingredients, google it if nothing else. You will be surprised!
